Job Title: 2nd Officer

Why did you choose this career path and how long have you been in your current role?

I followed my brother’s path who is now a Technical Operations Manager for Carnival Cruise Line. It took me seven years to get to the position of 2nd Officer (watch leader) and I've been in this position since June 2019.

What are you responsible for?

I’m responsible for the navigational watch from the navigational bridge. Basically, that means the overall safety of the ship’s operations, ensuring that the ship is navigating safely.

What specific qualifications and/or experience is required for this position?

I hold a Chief Mate license, the equivalent of a first officer license and I have spent many years working my way up through the ranks onboard the bridge.

What does your typical working day look like?

I wake up every day at 7:30 and start my first watch duty, which runs from 08:00 am - 12:00 noon. I complete any additional assigned duties between 15:00 and 17:00 and then I head to the gym to work out for an hour at 18:00. Finally, I go back to the bridge to complete my second watch duty from 20:00 - 00:00 midnight.

What personal qualities do you consider to be drivers of success for this position?

You have to have great interpersonal, management and organisational skills. It's also important to have a willingness to learn, genuine enthusiasm and personal drive.

If you weren’t doing what you are doing today, what other job would you have chosen and why?

I would probably have explored an acting career!

What do you enjoy most and what do you enjoy least about your job?

I love manoeuvring the ship when we get an opportunity to do so. It’s one of the best feelings ever! There's nothing that I don’t really enjoy. I approach my work-life and personal life in the same way, in that I try to do everything to the best of my ability and make the most of every moment. It's important to enjoy your work. It’s all about mindset!

Which of your co-workers would you like to give a 'shout out' to and why?

I'd like to give a shout-out to Staff Captain Niccolo De Ranieri. He's one of my greatest mentors and a friend.

What do you do for fun?

Photography and fitness are two of my greatest passions! You can see that clearly from my Instagram - feel free to follow me @alex_theofficer !

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know!

I love helping others and I’m currently developing a fitness and lifestyle coaching service in order to do more of that!

What piece of advice do you have for anybody considering a career in your sector?

For this position, it's really important to be very proficient not only in the nautical operation, but also in computer based skills. Candidates should also make sure that they can speak and understand English as much as possible before starting to work onboard. Be open minded and ready for new challenges on a daily basis because this is one of the most dynamic jobs that exists!
